Distribution: H. leucomelaena is found in spring and early summer in conifer forests, especially along paths and roadsides.

Identification Notes:

Helvella leucomelaena forms gray to dark brownish gray or blackish, urn- to cup- or star-shaped fruitbodies. The outer surface of the cup is finely pubescent and similar in color to the inner surface with a whitish lower portion. The short stipe, if present, has broad folds and ribs that extend a short ways onto the cup.
